Sojourn is a brief respite that comes upon this season of transition. A lone figure sits on a swing, suspended in the space of light and shadow, indicating a transient place rather than an ultimate place. Surface is constructed through layered texture and subtle contrast, allowing the space to feel inhabited and ongoing. Hints of gold move through the composition, representing resilience, hope, and the strength found while passing through uncertain moments. The piece captures something of the feelings between things like where we have been and where we are going.
Medium: Acrylic and gesso on canvas. Dimensions: 16 × 20 in (40.64 × 50.8 cm)
A solitary figure sits at the edge of what suggests a cliff, suspended between shadow and light. The surrounding surface is layered with depth and texture, evoking a quiet, enclosed space that feels both protective and vast. A subtle path of gold emerges through the surface, guiding the eye and suggesting movement, reflection, and inner passage rather than a literal destination. Sanctum explores the idea of sacred stillness — the moments where one pauses, listens, and simply exists within their own interior space. The figure is intentionally small, allowing the environment to speak louder than the individual, emphasizing solitude not as isolation, but as refuge.

Selah addresses us not only to the pauses we pass through before motion, but also to the meditative distance between what has been and what is yet to come. A lone figure rests beneath a towering tree, positioned between shadow and light. The vertical forms imply both shelter and weight, while gold accents bring warmth and the presence of something unseen yet felt. Instead of a literal ‘place’, the scene suggests an inner state. A moment of stillness, not passive, but intentional. An opportunity to pause, contemplate, and trust whatever is unfolding. This work honors the quiet strength found in pause, reminding us that moving forward is often shaped in moments of rest, awareness, and surrender.

Solace explores the experience of moving through uncertainty while being gently drawn toward light. A solitary figure advances across an open space, surrounded by layered texture and vertical forms that suggest both distance and depth. The contrast between shadow and illumination reflects the tension between isolation and hope. The surface is built through heavy texture, with subtle layers of gold emerging through the darkness. These elements symbolize reassurance, protection, and the presence of hope even when it is not immediately visible. Rather than depicting arrival, Solace honors the act of continuing. It speaks to the comfort found not in having answers, but in trusting the direction of the path and the guidance that exists along the way.

Rebirth reflects the kind of transformation that only comes after something has been tested. The central figure is a phoenix, rising from what suggests flame and fracture. The surface is heavily layered and distressed, creating depth that feels worn rather than polished. Gold and earth tones move through the wings with weight and texture, giving the form strength rather than fragility. The phoenix is not escaping the fire. It is emerging from it. The piece speaks to the reality that growth is often uncomfortable and refining. What rises after pressure is not the same as what entered it. It is stronger, clearer, and more aware.

Zantedeschia takes its name from the calla lily, a flower long associated with purity, faith, and renewal. I was drawn to its symbolism and structure. The blooms are sculpted with heavy texture so they physically rise from the surface, giving them weight and presence rather than a flat illusion. The restrained palette and high contrast keep the focus on form and movement. Splatter and line create tension around the flowers, but the blooms remain steady within it. The piece centers on clarity and renewal expressed through texture, contrast, and space.

Aiyana draws from African and Amharic roots meaning “eternal blossom“ and “beautiful flower”. The name felt aligned with the spirit of this piece. The raised floral forms are built in heavy texture so the blooms physically emerge from the surface rather than sit on it. The gold-trimmed petals mark endurance and strength carried through pressure. The title felt right because the painting carries growth, perception, and movement at once. It honors lineage, vitality, and the kind of beauty that develops through endurance, not ease.

The Liminal Hour reflects the idea that time and space are not as fixed as we think. Built through layered textures, map transfers, and surface distressing, the worn clock face and embedded cartography reference how people measure and organize the world. The dark vine forms move across the composition as continuing life and memory. Some elements are intentionally buried while others are revealed through abrasion and glazing. The work invites a pause to consider what exists beneath timelines and borders.

The Motherland is an exploration of origin, identity, and ancestral connection. The painting centers the unmistakable silhouette of the African continent, grounded in layered texture and tonal restraint. Carved lines and raised surfaces evoke maps, coded language, and histories etched into land. The contrast between earth tones and white space speaks to resilience, reverence, and the enduring strength carried across generations.
The piece comes professionally framed in a black floater frame with a 0.5-inch reveal. The clean, modern presentation enhances the textured surface while allowing the form to stand boldly within its negative space.

Inception marks a beginning, where light pushes through structure and something new starts to take form. The textured surface and vertical glow carry a quiet energy, like a moment caught between stillness and emergence. It’s about that first spark of change—the space where creation starts, not in noise, but in calm intention.
